ISLAM VERSUS COMMUNISM Part:2

ISLAM VERSUS COMMUNISM Part:2
The fifth aspect in which Islam is quite alien to communism is the right of inheritance. Islam has reserved the right of inheritance to the children after the death of their parents, whereas in communism this right has been abolished. In fact, Islam has a very elaborate and accurate system of dividing the wealth of the fathers and mothers on their inheritants. It adds materially to the fair distribution of wealth on them. It does not confine it for instance to the elder son as in the British system of inheritance. Islam defines very carefully those who have the right to inherit. In certain cases they may include many relations other than the children of the father or the mother. Male and female, children and relations of the father or the mother have their own shares.
The Qur’an is very clear on these points. The communists argue against the right of inheritance saying why should we give the son of a rich man priority to the son of a poor man ?; the two should be equally treated so far as wealth is concerned. In the meantime Islam defends the right of inheritance in a more logic way. It says that, no doubt, the physical and mental qualities of man are inherited by his children. Some of these qualities may be good while others may be bad. It is, therefore, fair enough to allow his children to inherit his wealth as well.

According to Islam there is another point in favor of this right. Children are nothing but an extension to the life of the parents. If we abolish the right of inheritance we are automatically killing the incentive of the parents to work hard for their future life, the life of their children. In so doing the whole human society will be affected and the people will have less incentive to do more work if such a drastic communistic principle is adopted all over the world.
Islam has also safeguarded the destruction of wealth by spoilt, loose or insane sons by making it compulsory for such sons to be under control and to be cared for by proper guardians.
Full freedom of man is the sixth aspect of life which Islam strongly stresses, whereas it is lacking in communist countries. In those countries the system of government is essentially a dictatorship. Since the early days of human history mankind has been thriving hard to enjoy full freedom. In so doing man achieved great success and in many societies and countries in the world the people reached the goal of choosing their own form of government and their ruler. In communist countries and in the second half of the twentieth century man has been rendered a mere tool of production in a big factory. His main job in life is to eat, sleep and work, but not to think or express himself, the government is to think for him. Thus human dignity is destroyed.
According to communistic principles, the whole systems of press, radio, television, education, art, army, police, officials and laborers are all organs for the promotion of the official ideals of the government. Writers, thinkers and leading men in society are not allowed to express their opinions freely, nay, they are very careful about what they write and watch their lips when giving public lectures. Great scientific, social or literary works have to be submitted before publication to the government au-
thorities who will not allow the publishing of any book unless it advocates and praises the communistic principles.
In so doing the incentive of the people to think clearly and freely is killed. New ideas and reforms are thus suppressed and the march of human society towards perfection is stopped. It is a well known fact that freedom is a great energy which gives a momentous impetus to human progress.
The evidence of lack of freedom in those countries is that
we see and meet tourists from all countries who are free to visit
other countries for any length of time, whereas we hardly meet or see any tourists from communist countries. Again if those countries are really heaven on earth why their inhabitants are not allowed to visit other countries in orher to appreciate the so-called progress of their countries when compared with other countries where full freedom is enjoyed.
We should also like to cite in this respect that even visitors to communist countries are not allowed to see everything they would like to see. Instead they are kept under strict observation during their stay in those countries.
In fact communism is a system in which man is wholly absorbed, and is made to forget his personality, his religion and country. Communists are a great net who aim at making their leaders in Eastern Europe the masters of the whole world. Thus we look upon communism as a system of mental colonization of the whole world.
In Islam individual liberty and the power to think for yourself and make your own judgment on matters affecting you and the world at large is the basis of reward and punishment in this world and in the hereafter after death. Such freedom is enjoyed by man according to Islamic principles to so great an axtent that he is free to choose not only any system of life he likes better, but Islam went to the extent that every man is free to choose
any religion he believes in. The Holy Qur’an says "let be no compulsion in religion, right stands clear out of wrong".
Thus we see that Islam requires from men to think for themselves, to judge which is right and which is wrong and finally to exercise their free will in adopting the system which they believe is right for them. The Caliph Omar was quoted to say to the governor of Egypt who was rude with his subordinates "Since when you enslaved human beings in spite of the fact that they have been all borne free".
Freedom of speech which is one of the criterions of Islamic traditions is lacking under communistic rule. The Caliph Omar when once giving a sermon was corrected by a woman from the congregation. His answer to this challenge was not the prosecution of that woman but was a clear confession declared publicly when he made his famous statement "A woman corrected a wrong and Omar made a mistake
Freedom of thought is highly encouraged in Islam, so much so, that the Prophet of Islam said, "The best thing a man can do is the utterance of just words on the face of an unjust ruler". This is no doubt the basis of freedom. By this saying the Prophet of Islam, may peace be upon him and all the Prophets, has encouraged the whole world to revolt against any unfair and unjust acts of any ruler. Islam went still a further step in that respect. Prophet Muhammad said "He who sees anything wrong should try and correct it by his hand, if not possible he should try to correct it by his tongue, if not possible he should condemn it in his heart and that is the least he can do".
It is more interesting indeed to note in this respect that the Holy Qur’an went as far as to ask Muslims to leave any land when they are oppressed and their freedom is restricted. It says
"They said we were persecuted on earth. Was not the earth of God wide enough for you to immigrate to another part of it .".
The seventh aspect of’ life in which Islam is quite different from communism is that the communistic principles do not allow any class to exist side by side with the Prolitaria. Karl Marx states "The struggle between classes leads eventually to the dictatorship of the working class. Such dictatorship will never exist except after a complete wiping out revolution. The Prolitaria will never be able to move or lift up themselves unless they wake up from the opium with which religions have poisoned them, and wipes out all classes of the society above them". In this respect Stalin has been also reported to have said "The liberation of the working class depends on the destroying revolution. The working class will not revolt unless we fill their hearts with grudge, despise and fear of the other classes, since grudge, despise and fear are the stimulating factors and the fuel of the revolution. When revolution starts we throw into it all such fuels one by one until it wipes out all our enemies
Islam does not accept such wicked principles. It forbids hatred and grudge between classes, individuals or even between nations. According to Islam all people are one international society and are all the sons and daughters of Adam and Eve, and thus they are all equal. Islam looks upon human society as one body if any one part of it aches the whole body will ache too.
It is a well known fact that all the principles of Islam deal very fairly and firmly with individuals on the terms of absolute equality and full fraternity and do not favor any one particular class. It should be remembered, however, that the existence of different classes is a natural phenomenon. It is in fact a social phenomenon which can never be abolished. Its case is exactly like the case of languages and nations.
Thus Islam, being a natural religion, accepts this natural and social phenomenon of the existence of different classes. But it should be mentioned here that in Islam the doors are wide open
between classes. Every one can, through his good deeds and noble acts reach the highest class, whether in political, social or economic spheres. We have cited, in our article about "Islam and Democracy" many cases where black slaves became through their zeal and hard work great leaders in many aspects of Islamic life including, ministers, leaders of armies, governors and heads of State.

ISLAM VERSUS COMMUNISM Part:1

ISLAM VERSUS COMMUNISM Part:1
BY Professor Dr. Mahmoud Youssef Shawarbi
Islam is a universal religion which is embraced by one quarter of the population of the world. In fact the followers of Islam are spread all over the world from the Far East to the Far West. Many thinkers in the world who studied Islam carefully believe that Islam is a natural barrier against communism.
In this essay we shall try to discuss this fact and show how Islam really stands as a concrete barrier against communism.
At the outset we should like to mention the main principles on which communism is founded. They can be summarized in the following
1. — The Denial of the existence of God.
2. — Life is absolutely materialistic and has no spiritual background.
3. — Abolition of private ownership.
4. — Nationalization of all resources and its control by the State.
5. — Replacing the inland trade by rationing cards.
6. — The adoption of Linin’s theory of wages which says "Form everyone according to his ability to everyone according to his needs."
It is thus clearly shown that the idea of communism is based on a purely materialistic basis. According to communism the whole universe has no supreme power behind it. It has no God who created it. The denial of the existence of God is a common belief Lo all communists. All the Russian pioneers to the space denied the existence of God. Karl Marx as one of the founders of communism. declares that there is no God and that the message of communism is to abolish religions.
By the denial of the existence of God, communism contradicts and ignores rail morals and spiritual values and kills the incentive in man to evaluate and respect all non-materialistic ideas. It thus makes man nothing but a tool in a big factory and kills the humane side in him.
These facts are evidenced by the great prosecution which Christianity and priests suffered at the hands of communists who believe that religion, any religion, is the opium of nations. They believe moreover that religion is something the nation should get rid of in order to achieve her goals in progress and prosperity.
Thus we see that communism is based almost and foremost on a very false assumption, namely, that man is nothing but a body without a soul. In so doing communism is defeating its own aim and is anti-nature itself. Man is composed of a body and. a soul and any regime who ignores anyone of those two sides of man is apt to fall. Human beings can never tolerate to be treated. as animals, nay, but as tools in a big factory.
In this respect, we find that communism is quite alien to Islam, which is based on a belief in one Almighty God Who created. both our eternal souls and mortal bodies. Islam as such caters for both the soul and the body.
In fact, according to Islam, we are humans due to our souls rather than to our bodies. The essence of life for a Muslim is his strong belief in God, the Most Merciful the Most Beneficent. He is the Lord of the worlds and the Creator of the universe, to Him everything belongs and unto Him everything ends.
It is beyond communists to appreciate the great effect of the belief in God on human souls. Even to the present day after these long years of spreading communistic principles in Russia, the communists were unable to extinguish completely the instinct of belief in God among all the Russians.
Secondly in communism this world is the ultimate goal of every communist. All his deeds end by his death. He is only responsible to the human authorities and is governed by human taws. The Muslim, on the other hand, believes that this world is only a beginning to an eternal life. To him it is like a farm for the other world and he is going to reap in the other x world what he cultivated in this world. His incentive to behave properly and act correctly and to be noble in all his deeds is not due to the human laws as much as it is due to the fear of God and the great hope to lead a peaceful and decent life in this world an in
the hereafter. Thus we see that the motive to act properly in Islam is within the human being himself. For this reason the individual in Islam is more conscientious and his behavior is governed by more eternal, continuous and spiritual values. From the above mentioned facts we see how Islam stands clear from communism and would lead, to bring up more humane individuals.
In fact a true Muslim is not only a good citizen of his own country but also a good citizen of the whole world. To him the human society at large is nothing but a great international family of the whole universe.
Thirdly, communism is quite contradictory to Islam because in the Islamic society there is no room for any other "ism" may it be communism, nazism or fascism. In Islam we have an "ism" of our own Any system of these various systems of government can never thrive under the rule of Islam, as it is in great conflict with its principles. The reason for this conflict is not far to seek. According to Islam all the Islamic laws derive their existence and power from the wisdom of the Creator of the whole universe. In the meantime the communistic laws derive their existence from those fallible creatures who worked them ont and thought them over.
it is clearly shown that no true Muslim would ever think of replacing the Islamic laws and principles by those communistic
laws. It is even quite simple for anyone outside the Islamic world to appreciate this fact. No reasonable man on earth would ever think of replacing any laws which he believes to be Divine by any man-made laws especially if these laws are against human nature and human instincts.
The fourth aspect of life in which Islam stands very firm against communism is the right of individual ownership. This right is sacred in Islam, so much so that the Prophet of Islam says "He who dies defending his honor dies as a martyr and he who dies defending his own property dies as a martyr".
The communistic principle of abolishing private ownership led to opposite results. The incentive of the people to do more and sincere work was killed.
So far as individual ownership is concerned, Islam is quite alien to communism. In Islam the individual has the right to own whatever he likes and to any extent he can cope with so far as he abides by the principles of legal profit and free and honest competition.
In fact the desire of ownership is a deeply rooted instinct in human beings and can never be eradicated. This instinct is definitely a great incentive for work and production. For this reason Islam stands very firm towards the right of ownership.
Islam, however, has regulated the fight of ownership very carefully and formulated many laws and regulations for this purpose. It levied certain exact taxation on every kind of property and made it an obligatory duty for every man and woman in Islam to observe it. I should like to add that Islam went in this respect as far as to make the observation of those taxations one of the five pillars of Islam, namely, the poor-rate which is also called almsgiving or "zakat".

In fact the system of "zakat" or almsgiving in Islam is an ideal system of taxation which has never been preceded in the history of mankind. It exceeds the man - made laws of taxation in many aspects, namely, the motive behind it, its justice, its universality, its great influence on the conscious of the tax payer and last but not least its wonderful results.
It should be mentioned here, however, that Islam in some cases may not allow the ownership of public services by one individual in order to avoid the dictatorship of great capitals.

Islam Vs Secularism

Islam Vs Secularism

Secularism is defined in the Webster dictionary as: "A system of doctrines and practices that rejects any form of religious faith and worship" or "The belief that religion and ecclesiastical affairs should not enter into the function of the state especially into public education."
There is no doubt that secularism contradicts Islam in every aspect. They are two different paths that never meet; choosing one means rejecting the other. Hence, whoever chooses Islam has to reject secularism. In the following, we go in the details of explaining why.
1- First, secularism makes lawful what Allah has made unlawful.
The Rule of Allah (Shari`ah) is compulsory and has basic laws and regulations that cannot be changed. Some of these laws are concerned with the acts of worship, the relations between men and women, etc.
What is the position with regard to these laws?
Secularism makes adultery lawful if the male and the female are consenting adults.
As for Riba (interest on money), it is the basis of all financial transactions in secular economies. On the contrary, Allah says (s.2 A. 278): "O you who believe, fear Allah and leave what comes from Riba if you are believers. If you do not do so, then wait for a war from Allah and His Messenger."
As for alcohol, all secular systems allow the consumption of alcohol and make selling it a lawful business.
2- Second, secularism is clear unbelief (Kufr).
Secularism is based on separating religion from all the affairs of this life and hence, it rules by law and regulations other than Allah's laws. Hence, secularism rejects Allah's rules with no exception and prefers regulations other than Allah's and His Messenger's. In fact, many secularists claim that Allah's laws might have been suitable for the time they were revealed but are now outdated.
As a result, most of the laws governing the daily affairs of life in the countries ruled by secular systems contradict Islam. Allah says (S.5 A.50): "Do they seek a judgment of Ignorance? But, who, for a people whose faith is assured, can give better judgment than Allah?"
Ibn Katheer said in the Tafseer of this verse that Allah is denouncing those who reject His ruling and accept other rulings that are not based on the Shari`ah of Allah. Whoever does so is indeed a non-believer. Indeed, belief in Allah can never go with the acceptance of other than His rulings in one's heart. Allah says (S.5 A.44): "If any do fail to judge by what Allah has revealed, they are non-believers."
From the above, the status of secularism and its relation to Islam are clear. But the ignorance about the Islamic truth is still dominating the Muslim's mind. Most secular systems repeat slogans like "no religion in politics and no politics in religion" or "religion is for Allah, and the state is for the people." Such sayings portray their view of Islam as a religion to be practiced in the mosque only, and that it should not be allowed to rule life outside the mosque. Furthermore, they try to deceive people with democratic slogans like "personal freedom" and "people governing people." That means that people come first and no place is made for the ruling of Allah.
This is why secularism is clear Kufr, this is why secular systems have no legality and authority and should be rejected by Muslims.

PILLARS OF ISLAM

In Islam there are five basic duties which Muslims must perform. They are known as the five pillars of Islam (Arkanul Islam). These are: Shahadah, the establishment of prayer (Salah), the payment of Zakah (paying the poor due), the Hajj (pilgrimage to Makkah and Sawm Ramadan (fasting the month of Ramadan).

1- SHAHADA (The First Pillar of Islam)
لا إله إلا الله محمد رسول الله

“La llaha illal-lah Muhammad -ur-rasulullah“

“There is no god but Allah and Muhammad is the messenger of Allah“

2- SALAH (The Second Pillar of Islam)
The second pillar of Islam is performing Salah (prayer). The Muslim is enjoined to perform five obligatory prayers every day to keep himself in relation with his Lord, to invoke and implore Him, and to refrain himself from committing lewdness or indecency. These prayers not only ensure psychological rest to the Muslim in this present life, but they also pave the way to him to gain eternal happiness in the hereafter.

3- ZAKAAT (The Third Pillar of Islam)
ALLAH ordained every Muslim who possesses a certain amount a certain amount of property to pay annually of these possessions the Zakah to the poor, or to the other categories mentioned in the Quran.

4- SAWM RAMADHAN (The Fourth Pillar of Islam)
The fourth pillar of Islam is to fast during the month of Ramadan, the ninth month of the Hijri calendar.
Before the dawn of the first day of Ramadan, the Muslim in-tends to fast this month, and abstains every day from drinking, eating, or practicing sex till after the sun sets, He performs the fasting till the end of the month of Ramadan, fulfilling by that the commandment of Allah, and seeking His pleasure.

5- Hajj (The Fifth Pillar of Islam)
Pilgrimage (Hajj) is the fifth pillar of Islam. It is a duty for a Muslim to perform pilgrimage to the House of Allah once in lifetime, however it is permissible to him to do pilgrimage voluntarily more than once.

Pilgrimage has innumerable benefits:

  1. In fulfilling this service, man expresses his devotion to Allah, not only by performing rites which need physical effort, but he expresses also his deep spiritual devotion to Allah and spends of his money for His sake.
  2. Pilgrimage is an annual Muslim-congress, attended by Muslims from all over the world.

The Muslim nation has a universal message for mankind

If as a researcher, I were to compare the men of yesterday and today whose prejudices have scarred the very core of religion, then I am overwhelmingly inclined to convict the latter. This is because their attitudes and prejudices do not merely affect them personally, but threaten to undermine and devastate the future of humankind.
Racism and discrimination can be driving forces which lead people to hatred and closed-mindedness -- two sentiments that contradict all Allaah-given values.
The force of destruction -- if it can be thus described -- of distorting or misinterpreting the role of religion, may result in religious indifference, or in the reduction of the social and moral relevance of religion.
Correcting the understanding of civilization is man's first step towards acknowledging the multiplicity of civilizations and the variety of cultures, which are prerequisites to achieving peaceful coexistence with people of other nations.
Man must understand that civilization is the product of perseverance. It is the fruit of creativity, that survives the challenges and demands of time and place. Man must learn to use the scales of justice granted to him and to recognize that his civilization and cultural heritage carry at their core a sublime message, which he must follow -- positively or negatively -- as he pleases.
Allaah Almighty Says in the glorious Quran (what means): "We sent aforetime our Messengers with clear signs and sent down with them The Book and the Balance (of Right and Wrong), that men may stand forth in justice" [Quran 60: 25]
Concerning this issue of religion and civilization, Professor Maalik bin Nabi states:
"Civilization is prompted with the incentive of religious belief. Thus in every civilization we must search for the religious origins."
Ironically, is not the Christianity of today's liberal West that self-same Christianity which was attacked and hounded by 'enlightened' Western thinkers centuries ago? This is the very question we address to the representatives of the Christian faith who await any opportunity to attack Islam and the Muslim world.
If we were to examine the symbols of contemporary Christian thought used in any of its assaults on other cultures, we would find it a cross between secularism on one hand, and a collection of isolated philosophical, social, and religious values on the other.
Not surprisingly, the two are in no way related. The causal observer need exert very little effort to reach the conclusion that Western civilization, despite its haughtiness and tyranny, and its economic and material dominance in the world, is actually in a state of deadlock.
Western man is in need of direction and a definition of his very essence. It is in this arena that the Muslim nation can play a very important role.                                                                           Globalization and Civilization Interaction The Muslim Ummah (nation) carries a universal and final message to all of humankind, and therefore, it must be present in any age to take part positively in civilization. Many questions are asked concerning the standpoint Muslims are taking towards globalization. Do we, as a nation, accept or reject the concept? Do we feel positive or negative about it? In fact, these questions are illogical for two reasons:
Firstly, the Muslim Ummah is responsible for bearing the message of Islam to humanity and for bearing witness to Allaah's word. This can only be achieved by laying down a paragon of excellence using the Divine code conveyed in the Holy Quran.
It is a code that touches family life, society and civilized conduct. Failure to set a good example in life and society is to fall short in doing one's duty and faithfully spreading the truth. If this is the case with a small minority of Muslims worldwide, it is inconceivable that the entire Ummah who read Allaah's divinely protected book and know His truth would behave so irresponsibly.
Hence, however powerful the West may be within the framework of globalization, and however influential its modern culture is, it is still impossible for it to append the Muslim world as part of its own civilization.
Secondly, in our day and age, choosing to be negative and passive, or blindly refusing to make any choice whatsoever, are both impossible attitudes to maintain. Distances have shrunk and barriers have been stripped away, making the world a much smaller place.
There is now no way for us to seclude ourselves closing our eyes and ears to the outside world. In any case, such an attitude goes against the true spirit of Islamic teachings and civilization, and the universality of its message.
Thus, the true believing Muslim who upholds the ageless banner of his civilization must interact with his peers and surroundings. There must be between him and members of other cultures the type of exchange that allows for better understanding and appreciation.
He should reach out to others through Da'wah, the call to Islam, setting a good example, establishing justice, and discussing all issues with wisdom and forbearance.
It is my opinion that while the vast Muslim masses should focus on setting good examples, the role of discourse and major discussions should be the call of Muslim scholars, thinkers and intellectuals who are capable of fulfilling this role and bearing the responsibility of such an obligation.
The history of our Islamic civilization has passed down a glorious heritage and a wealth of unique achievements by which we should feel honored. We must seek inspiration from our great past and borrow some of its dazzling accomplishments according to the spirit of the present age, in order to cooperate and better interact with other cultures in goodness and righteousness.
Professor Muhammad Abu Zahrah states: “Coming closer and developing a better understanding of other cultures requires co-operation in order to uphold truth and virtue, put down falsehood and administer co-operation so that people from every part of the earth may unite to protect and support the weak everywhere, and to prevent tyranny and oppression from corrupting humanit
